| ICD-9 stands for the International Classification of Diseases (Version 9). These codes are used in diagnosis, in the CPOE Lab, and are required for billing.
ICD-10 codes are also in use by some clinics.
The choice of clinic at the ordering stage is built into the system so that the user sees ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes as requested.
The user may occasionally add a new code or delete a redundant code. They can also flag a code as inactive so that it is not used in any subsequent Patient Encounter.
Note that since these codes run into the thousands, they are arranged in a hierarchy.
460-519 is an example of a dummy code added to maintain the hierarchy. For codes with one or two places after the decimal, the parent is very obvious.
With so many interdependencies, the user is unlikely to have a need to edit, add, or delete codes.
Code: This field is mandatory and is applicable only when adding new codes. Existing codes that have already been imported cannot be changed. In such a case, one needs to delete the record and create a new one.
Name: It is mandatory to specify at least one of the three names given for the disease. The User Name will be used to specify this ICD code in PrognoCIS. Since the names are imported from the ICD database, the user is allowed to change the name according to their nomenclature.
User Category: ICD codes can be grouped into user-defined categories, which can be achieved by either entering a new user category or selecting one from the Auto-Complete List.
